Defensive coordinator candidate who rejected Colorado football is crucial for Miami Dolphins staff.

According to Arunima Gucchait of Essentially Sports, new Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, who was Coach Prime’s top Colorado football DC candidate before Mike McDaniel hired him, will be crucial.

“Deion Sanders identified former Ravens’ defensive line coach Weaver as the Buffaloes’ top candidate for the defensive coordinator position,” Gucchait prefaced before saying, “However, despite their efforts, the Buffaloes were unable to secure Weaver’s commitment, and the Miami Dolphins were eventually able to hire him.”

“Weaver adds a plethora of coaching experience to his new post, having spent 12 seasons in the NFL. He has worked for significant clubs such as the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Texans, and Ravens, with notable success as an assistant head coach with the Ravens. In Miami, Weaver inherits a quality defense and takes over as defensive coordinator under head coach Mike McDaniel’s tutelage. His arrival is critical for the Dolphins as they transition to a new era following previous coaching changes.”

Colorado football is about to name Buffs’ defensive coordinator.

Weaver is out, but Colorado appears to be preparing to hire a defensive coordinator soon. And Coach Prime has vowed that anybody he chooses will have a boatload of NFL experience. The idea is to train recruits for the pros, and recruits who want to go pro will be of greater caliber than anyone CU has previously received.

Whoever comes in will have Travis Hunter and a plethora of other high-quality secondary talent, and the expectation is that the transfer portal haul in the trenches would aid a defense that was frequently outmatched in 2023.

Mike Zimmer is an option, but it appears he would have been employed by now if he was the path CU was taking. Rex Ryan and Ed Reed were the more prominent possibilities discussed, and perhaps Super Bowl Week would be an excellent opportunity to reveal either.

Without Weaver, there is no clear top candidate.
