The quest is finished, and Mike Zimmer has returned to a familiar location.

Mike Zimmer is back in the NFL—and right back where it all started.

Dallas is hiring Zimmer, a former Minnesota Vikings head coach and veteran Cowboys assistant, as its next defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

Zimmer was selected from a list of high-profile interviews that included former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera and former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan.

Zimmer has long been regarded for managing tough defenses and taking a gritty approach to coaching, which should be ideal for replacing Dan Quinn, who went on to become the Commanders’ head coach after three seasons leading a top-five scoring defense in Dallas.

Following a two-year break, Zimmer will take up the role.

One day after it was revealed that the Dallas front office denied the Commanders’ request to interview their tight ends coach for a position on Quinn’s new staff in the nation’s capital, ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that the Cowboys’ long-time divisional rivals have also been looking at several other coaching assistants.

According to Archer, who cited a source, the Cowboys also declined the Commanders’ request to interview defensive backs coach Al Harris. Harris has emerged as a favorite candidate to succeed Quinn as Dallas’ defensive coordinator.
