Ben Johnson is allegedly in serious competition for the Washington Commanders’ job alongside fellow Detroit Lions coach and others.
While Ben Johnson appears to be the odds-on favorite to become the Washington Commanders’ next head coach, he could face stiff opposition in the coming weeks, including from a fellow member of the Detroit Lions coaching staff.
Just a few weeks ago, there were up to eight head coach openings in the NFL. However, in the previous week, that number has been reduced to only two teams: the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks. Despite the availability of excellent head coaches such as Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh, and Mike Vrabel, both organizations have chosen not to hire them.
While it is unknown what direction Seattle will take, all indicators point to the Commanders hiring Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their next head coach when Detroit’s season finishes. However, the team’s front office would be failing to perform its duty if they did not contact any remaining interested prospects.
According to sources, Ben Johnson is not a lock to become the head coach of the Washington Commanders.
In recent days, the company has spoken with Mike Macdonald, the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator, and Anthony Weaver, the associate head coach and defensive line coach. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter stated on Saturday night that the Commanders are now anticipated to do second interviews with both individuals when the Ravens wrap up their season this weekend or after the Super Bowl in two weeks.
Johnson is also anticipated to have a second interview with Washington soon, but Schefter also confirmed that Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will meet with the team again soon.
Recent reports have stated Johnson is the favorite to earn the post, but Schefter noted that sources have informed him that the claims are false and that the aforementioned individuals are still “very much in play” to land the position in the coming weeks.
Johnson has been a popular candidate over the last two years, nearly landing a head coaching job last season before the Lions handed him a significant increase to stay in Detroit this season.
