The 2023 Green Bay Packers exceeded the majority of the national media’s expectations. Many predicted that Green Bay would finish last in the NFC North, but the team finished 9-8 thanks to three consecutive wins at the close of the regular season. Not only did these victories give them a winning record, but they also catapulted them to the NFL Playoffs, where they defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.

Jordan Love outperformed everyone’s expectations in his debut year as starting quarterback, which contributed significantly to their regular-season victory. Many predicted that the offense would suffer after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets. That was not the case.

Love and the offense struggled at times throughout the season, but the young bunch of pass catchers’ relationship with their quarterback eventually led to the thrilling plays fans have come to anticipate from LaFleur’s attack.

The team’s defense fell short of expectations. Sure, they ended tenth in points allowed, but they also had one of the NFL’s worst run defenses, allowing several game-winning drives throughout the season and playoffs. Because of the abundance of veterans and former first-round picks on the roster, this was anticipated to be the team’s carrying unit. That, regrettably, did not occur.

The Green Bay Packers fired defensive coordinator Joe Barry.

NFL Week 3 Coaching Decisions: Matt LaFleur Proved His Mettle in Packers' Comeback Win - Sports Illustrated

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Packers decided to remove defensive coordinator Joe Barry this morning.

Barry was fired after his defense enabled Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers offense to drive down the field late in the fourth quarter of the NFC Divisional round. The drive culminated in a touchdown, giving the 49ers the lead and, subsequently, the victory.

Following the Packers’ 33-30 victory in Carolina, in which Barry’s defense allowed 30 points to the NFL’s worst offense, head coach Matt LaFleur told the media that he would be assuming greater responsibility of the defense. Barry’s terrible defensive systems had harmed the squad far too much this season, as they had in previous seasons, and it was time for a change.

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Releases a Statement Regarding Joe Barry’s Firing

Coach LaFleur issued the following statement on the Packers website:

Packers Fire Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry - Sports Illustrated Green Bay Packers News, Analysis and More

“We’d want to thank Joe for his devotion and contributions to our success over the last three seasons. These are really difficult decisions, and Joe is one of the best men I’ve had the privilege of working with in this league.”

Barry is widely regarded as one of the best people in the NFL. He is likable, and players enjoy playing for him.

Unfortunately, a winning demeanor does not often transfer into winning on the field, so the Packers will be seeking for someone who can provide more fire to the defense.
