The Detroit Lions, who suffered a terrible loss in Sunday’s NFC Championship game, have emerged as real NFL contenders. Under Head Coach Dan Campbell, the Lions have remade themselves as a squad willing to go to any length to win, even if it means taking innovative approaches.
A lot of that was due to Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson and the offensive plan he and quarterback Jared Goff implemented this season. Detroit had one of the more efficient attacks this season, scoring the fifth most points in the NFL at 27.4 per game.

Ben Johnson had many head coaching offers throughout the offseason. Including clubs such as the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks, but has elected to return as Detroit’s offensive coordinator after losing the NFC Championship this year. Johnson will most likely be a top candidate for head coaching roles the following season, but he will be guiding the offense in Detroit next year.
Detroit Lions Offense Scored 31 Points in NFC Championship Game.
While the Lions were unable to win on Sunday and go to this year’s Super Bowl, their offense kept them in the game, scoring 31 points. Detroit led throughout the duration of the game and went into the halftime locker room up 24-7, but they were unable to string together complete drives in the second half. This allowed the San Francisco 49ers to come back and win the game.
Despite the setback, Johnson’s return for next season is huge news given Detroit’s offensive prowess this year and the opportunities he had for promotion. Under Johnson as Offensive Coordinator, the Lions will be favorites to win the NFC North and have one of the greatest offenses in the NFL entering next season.
