Michael Beale confirms player swap for Sunderland deal.

The former Rangers manager has yet to make a single signing since taking over at the Black Cats.
Sunderland manager Michael Beale is reportedly looking to sign ex-Celtic starlet Leo Fuhr Hjelde.

Since taking over from Tony Mowbray at the Stadium of Light last month, former Rangers boss Beale has yet to make a single signing. However, The Sun understands that he is set to approach Championship promotion rivals Leeds United about a loan transfer for Norwegian defender Hjelde. The huge stopper, who can also play left-back, has only appeared three times for the Lily Whites this season and could be loaned out to earn more first-team experience.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Rotherham, appearing 13 times, and Beale is thought to be looking to improve his defensive options. During his loan spell with the Highlanders from Celtic, ex-Ross County manager John Hughes dubbed Hjelde “the next Virgil van Dijk”.

However, the kid has battled for playing time since moving from Parkhead to Elland Road in 2021. Now, he might join Beale at the Black Cats before the window ends on February 1.

Sunderland eased the burden on Beale by defeating Stoke City 3-1 in the Championship yesterday.
