Sunderland suffered their third successive defeat, falling 1-0 to promotion rivals Hull City at the Stadium of Light Wednesday night.
Head coach Michael Beale has urged Sunderland fans to rally behind the team following their tight home defeat to Hull City. A deflected Fabio Carvalho strike secured the Tigers maximum points, and the victory put them back in the Championship play-offs heading into the weekend’s matches.
It is the Black Cats’ third successive defeat, and Beale had to listen to his own fans chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning” after Carvalho’s winner. The hosts were booed at the end of the game.
Beale, who succeeded Tony Mowbray in December, said: “I’d ask the fans to support the players – I understand the displeasure. They can witness the players’ efforts on the field, and they must recognize the value of any assistance they can provide. When you are at home and at a club like this, you expect to win, and we are no exception; we are deeply disappointed.
“I’m only one month into the work. It demonstrates the current expectations for managers. I believe that the supporters must rally behind the players on the field because they are a young bunch, and I believe that they are unaware of the extent of their support for that young group.
“I’ll take whatever comes my way, and I’ll accept the burden of managing this club. It is what it is; if you win games, people are delighted; if you lose, they are unhappy.”
