Former Stanford coach David Shaw will interview for the Tennessee Titans job.

With the NFL coaching carousel in full gear, former Stanford coach David Shaw has emerged as an unexpected candidate.

He recently interviewed for a position with the Los Angeles Chargers, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he is slated to interview again this weekend. The NFL insider revealed that Shaw will be interviewing with the Tennessee Titans, who fired Mike Vrabel.

Shaw was not on anyone’s sidelines this season, since he transitioned to the media after leaving Stanford as head coach after the 2022 season. This season, Shaw will appear as an analyst on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay Live.

Prior to stepping down as Stanford’s head coach, Shaw transformed the Cardinal into a Western powerhouse. The program had established itself as a rare academic and gridiron powerhouse, making it something of an outlier in collegiate football. Stanford won three Pac-12 crowns under Shaw’s leadership after Jim Harbaugh left to become head coach of the 49ers. They also won two Rose Bowls in three appearances, had numerous Heisman runner-ups, and had a Pac-12-high 43 players chosen. Despite retiring on a bad note after multiple losing seasons in a row, he was the winningest coach in Stanford history.

Shaw was regarded as having an NFL attitude when he led Stanford’s program, but as the sport evolved, he and the Cardinal fell behind. There was a reluctance to change plans, and when the transfer portal came into play, Stanford showed little to no interest in using it.

Shaw also interviewed for the Denver Broncos’ opening in 2023.
