The Green Bay Packers’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys will almost certainly have an impact on both coaching staffs. Following their Wild Card round victory against the Cowboys, the Packers are expected to retain defensive coordinator Joe Barry.

Following his team’s surprise loss in Dallas, former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy could be fired by the Cowboys. Based on the outcome of the game on Sunday, Barry and McCarthy went into the game knowing their careers were on the line.

Barry had a difficult time training NFL MVP candidate Dak Prescott. Prescott had a fantastic passing target in wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who Barry had to plan for. Following the Packers’ victory against the Cowboys, Packers fans showered Barry with affection on social media.

According to CBS Sports’ Eli Berkovits, Matt LaFleur stated during his press conference on Monday that Barry is safe to be retained for the 2024 season:

“I couldn’t be more delighted… There were some difficult times… I know what we’ve got in him. I was certain that someone could correct the ship. He was the one.”

LaFleur’s remarks on Monday contrast sharply with the somber words he delivered to his defensive coordinator following the team’s back-to-back losses to the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When quarterback Baker Mayfield posted a perfect passer rating in Tampa Bay’s win at Lambeau Field in mid-December, LaFleur attacked Barry’s gameplan.

In their following game, the Packers’ defense struggled against rookie quarterback Bryce Young and a faltering Carolina Panthers offense. The Panthers outscored the Packers by 30 points.

When the season was on the line, Barry’s defense made the proper judgments. Some could argue that his defense put the Packers in a difficult position to make the playoffs at the end of the season. However, following a huge win in Dallas, LaFleur is inclined to give Barry the benefit of the doubt.
