Former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale could find himself on another team sooner rather than later.
According to Albert Breer of SI.com, Martindale will interview with the Jaguars for the position of defensive coordinator next Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to Breer, a number of teams are interested in using Martindale’s defensive plan, so Jacksonville may not be Martindale’s only stop.
Martindale and the Giants parted ways earlier this week. Martindale reportedly cursed at New York head coach Brian Daboll after learning of Daboll’s plans for the defensive staff.
Martindale was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021 before joining the Giants for the last two seasons.
Several reports Martindale will meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars this week, according to SI’s Albert Breer, who says the interview will take place Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to Breer, Martindale’s ultra-aggressive defensive strategy is “one that a LOT of teams are interested in.”
Martindale, said to Ian Rapoport, “has been a popular figure in defensive coordinator searches.”
Martindale, 60, was fired by the Giants this week after fighting with head coach Brian Daboll. Martindale reportedly clashed with Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh after leaving the Ravens as defensive coordinator at the end of the 2021 season.
The Jaguars and any other team interested in hiring Martindale will, of course, ask for his version of events. Martindale, on the other hand, is regarded as one of the NFL’s greatest defensive coordinators, so it’s no wonder that he’s attracting attention.
