REPORT: With a Wild Card victory, the Green Bay Packers might hand Bill Belichick over to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Green Bay Packers are concerned about their postseason run with the youngest squad to make the playoffs since the Buffalo Bills in 1974. However, their status as a potential spoiler in their game against the Dallas Cowboys could have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the league.

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has fired head coach Mike McCarthy ahead of the playoffs. The Cowboys appear ready to let go of McCarthy if the team fails to make the playoffs this month. To land a head coach, the Cowboys would need to move swiftly because two top candidates are being courted by numerous teams.

The Seattle Seahawks have expressed interest in Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. But the largest head coach free agent in the game on Thursday morning was Bill Belichick, who announced his departure from the New England Patriots without seeking a trade.

The Dallas Cowboys have been linked to Bill Belichick.

According to NBC Sports’ Mike Florio, Jones promised Belichick decades ago that he’d be willing to appoint the New England Patriots great as the Cowboys’ head coach. Belichick admires the Cowboys as well:

“Before the Patriots faced the Cowboys in the 2023 regular season, Belichick stated of the Joneses, “I have a ton of respect for Jerry and Stephen, and the way they run the organization down there.” They’ve enjoyed a lot of success.

They were the ’90s team with Jimmy [Johnson], and they’ve been good. Every year, they’ve been competitive, if not more than competitive. They’ve had some fantastic players down there. Tony [Romo] had a fantastic run.

“Those were fantastic years with Tony and Coach [Bill] Parcells.” We played them here in the early 2000s, but I’m always on the lookout for them because of the way they do things. They’ve gotten a lot of output from people who, in my opinion, aren’t big-name players — free agents, individuals they dig out down there.

I believe their scouting team performs an excellent job. They have a lot of experience. Almost all of their scouts have spent their entire careers with the Cowboys, so they have grown up with them and understand their system. I believe they have excellent staff management.”

Can the Packers beat the Cowboys this weekend?

Belichick, 71, does not want to rebuild a squad. The Cowboys would be the ideal team for Belichick to join this offseason and lead to a Super Bowl victory over the next several seasons.

Belichick’s greatest chance of becoming Cowboys head coach is for McCarthy to lose this weekend to his former team, the Packers. The longer the Cowboys remain in the playoffs, the more probable it is that Belichick will find another suitor or that the Cowboys will keep McCarthy.
