The Green Bay Packers advanced to the NFL Playoffs after defeating the Chicago Bears 17-9 on Sunday afternoon, defying all odds at the start of the season. While the Packers’ loss drove them into the playoffs, it put the Bears in an all-too-familiar position: last place in the NFC North.

While there was speculation that Bears head coach Matt Eberflus might be fired at the end of the season, the Chicago front office has decided to keep him for at least one more year. His offensive coaching staff, on the other hand, is not so fortunate.

On social media today, it was claimed that the Bears fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and other members of his coaching staff. After defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned at the start of the season, Chicago is now seeking for all new coordinators in 2024.

LaFleur hands playsheet to Luke Getsy for fouth preseason game

Getsy, of course, was hired by Chicago after working for the Packers from 2014 to 2021 (save for 2018 when he was the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State). Getsy worked in Green Bay as a quality control coach, wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach, and passing game coordinator.

Some Green Bay Packers fans want Luke Getsy to be reinstated.

Aaron Rodgers won three NFL MVP Awards during Getsy’s career in Green Bay (2014, when he was an offensive quality control coach, and 2020-2021, when he was the quarterback coach). While the Packers’ offensive was among the top in the NFL for the most of Getsy’s employment, his failure to boost the Bears’ offense suggests that Green Bay’s success was due to head coaches Mike McCarthy and Matt LaFleur.

Nonetheless, when Tom Clements retired, Rodgers chose Getsy to be his position coach (ironically, it was Clements who replaced Getsy when the latter took the offensive coordinator job with Chicago). Many Packers supporters want LaFleur to bring him back on staff in some form in 2024, citing his background, or at least the success of the offense during his stint in Green Bay:

As previously stated, Clements is still the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback coach and has made no indication that he will retire (again). Adam Stenavich is the Packers’ offensive coordinator, and Jason Vrable has done an outstanding job with the team’s young wide receivers. As is, it’s difficult to envision Getsy fitting in on the coaching staff.

That being said, anything is possible. One thing to remember is that Getsy was hired as quarterback coach by Rodgers. Getsy worked with Nathaniel Hackett in Green Bay and has the ear of the New York Jets’ front office.

It would not be surprising if New York recruited him next year.
