The Washington Commanders have already begun the search for their next head coach.
Only hours after announcing the dismissal of head coach Ron Rivera, NFL Network reports that the organization has requested interviews with Detroit Lions coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. “We decided to part ways with Ron Rivera today.”
“I want to thank Ron and Stephanie for everything they did for the Commanders and the DMV community, especially during the ownership transition,” said owner Josh Harris in a statement. “Ron guided this organization through some difficult times.”
He is a terrific man and a thoughtful leader who has benefited both this organization and the NFL. I wish the Rivera family all the best in the future.”
Harris has formed an advisory committee to monitor the coaching search following a poor 4-13 season.
The new leadership group includes former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman and former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers.
“Alongside my partners, I have assembled a small advisory committee to assist me in identifying two important roles for this organization: head of football operations and head coach,” Harris said in a statement. “I have asked Mitch Rales, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, and David Blitzer, as well as Bob Myers and Rick Spielman, to join the advisory committee that will work with me to make the best decisions for the franchise.”
Both Johnson and Glenn are regarded as among the league’s top contenders for future head coaches, having led the Lions to their first playoff appearance since 2016.
