This offseason, the Green Bay Packers will undoubtedly face some difficult decisions. It is commonly assumed that their choice for defensive coordinator will be near the top of the list. It would be remarkable if the Packers kept Joe Barry in that job after this season.

As it turns out, a former Super Bowl champion could be in line to take over the Green Bay defense.

Wade Phillips is expected to be hired as the Green Bay Packers’ next defensive coordinator in 2024.

Phillips not only has the experience, but his resume speaks for itself. Although he hasn’t been an NFL coach since 2019, many people forget how outstanding his defenses were. In Super Bowl 50, Phillips’ Denver Broncos defense defeated the high-powered Carolina Panthers offense 24-10. I

Phillips’ Los Angeles Rams defense restricted Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to three points in the first three quarters of Super Bowl LII. While the Rams were defeated, Phillips’ defense only allowed 13 points to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

As if his resume and background weren’t enough, Phillips has a Los Angeles connection with LaFleur, which played a role in LaFleur’s decision to recruit Joe Barry. Phillips also coached a Houston Roughnecks squad that made the XFL playoffs this year. Phillips is the best candidate for the job of defensive coordinator.

What Strengths Would Phillips Bring to the Packers?

Phillips has been a coach for over 40 years. He has been the defensive coordinator for eight different NFL clubs and has coached in two Super Bowls. He won 56% of his games as a head coach, including three full-time roles with Buffalo, Denver, and Dallas, as well as three interim ones with New Orleans, Atlanta, and Houston.
