With only a few weeks until the team’s appearance in the College Football Playoff, a Texas Longhorns quarterback made the shocking choice to enter the transfer portal. Texas’ quarterback room is an embarrassment of riches.
Quinn Ewers is anticipated to return to Texas for the 2024 season rather than join the draft. Arch Manning seemed to want to remain in Austin. However, Maalik Murphy is expected to enter the transfer portal.
Murphy will leave the Texas Longhorns.
Murphy, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, is entering the transfer portal and will not be with Texas for the playoffs. Murphy stated that his decision to enter the portal was made for his own benefit and had nothing to do with the Longhorns’ program:
“I have nothing against Texas. I’m only doing this for me and my future. In my view, I will always be a Longhorn and a member of this fantastic team.”
Because of the packed quarterback room, it was always possible that Murphy or Manning would elect to join the transfer portal. Murphy, on the other hand, entered the portal before Texas’ entry in the CFP.
Entering the portal now will help Murphy to better position himself for his next school before other quarterbacks transfer in. Giving up a chance to play in the CFP must be difficult for the 19-year-old athlete.
Murphy played a big part of Texas making the playoffs. When Quinn Ewers had a shoulder injury, the redshirt freshman appeared in seven games for Texas, starting two of them. This season, Murphy passed for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Murphy was a highly regarded recruit out of high school. College football teams in need of a quarterback will be interested in him.
