Newcastle United are preparing to compete with AC Milan for Lille sensation Jonathan David.

The striker had 26 goals and four assists last season and has continued his strong play this season with seven goals and two assists.

David has long been on the Serie A club’s radar, and he is now their first priority for bolstering their assault. Newcastle have joined the fight to recruit the 23-year-old, and this has become Milan’s “biggest problem.”

TuttoMercatoWeb reports that the Magpies are acting as a ‘obstacle’ for the Rossoneri.

Eddie Howe’s squad is alleged to have tested the waters in order to discover the criteria required to sign the Ligue 1 frontman.

The Canada international’s contract runs until 2025, and the French club’s asking has never been less than €35 million, according to the newspaper. Stefano Pioli’s side considers this number to be high, and Newcastle’s presence complicates the potential trade even more.

TMW claims it is ‘practically impossible’ for Milan to compete financially with the Premier League side for David’s services.

Newcastle presently has two forwards in Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, and David will have to compete with them if he joins there in January.
