According to TeamTalk, Leicester City are keen to compete with Newcastle United for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley ahead of the January transfer window.

O’Riley came up via Fulham’s youth and joined MK Dons on a free transfer in 2021, while the club was still in League One. After the Scottish giants activated his release clause, his impressive showing with the Dons earned him a £1.5 million move to Celtic in January 2022.

Ange Postecoglou, the current manager of Tottenham Hotspur, was the man who brought the midfielder to Celtic Park as the club won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

During the summer transfer window, it was claimed that Leeds United were interested in signing O’Riley and made a £10 million approach for his services, which Celtic quickly refused.

According to TeamTalk, Leicester City are preparing to make an offer for the 23-year-old midfielder, but the Glasgow club are holding out for £25 million, with Newcastle also keen.

O’Riley has had another productive season with Celtic in Scotland, scoring nine goals in 23 games and is presently the club’s leading scorer in all competitions and the Premiership’s joint-top scorer with Rangers star Abdallah Sima.

In addition, the playmaker has eight assists for Celtic, including five in the league. So far in the 2023/24 season, no player has scored more goals in the Premier League than O’Riley.

Author’s Opinion

O’Riley appears poised for a return to English football, having done so well with MK Dons during his one-year loan before joining Celtic.

The Dane, on the other hand, is a considerably better player than he was in League One two years ago and could be a fantastic addition for Leicester City as Enzo Maresca’s team pushes for promotion back to the Premier League.
