The Edmonton Elks have officially announced the addition of American player James Wiggins to improve their defensive backfield. After a time in the United States Football League (USFL), the seasoned player is expected to join the Elks for the 2018 Canadian Football League season.
Wiggins played three games with the New Orleans Breakers last season, recording nine tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. Prior to joining the USFL, the 26-year-old Miami, Florida native was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. His debut season includes contributions primarily on special teams in three regular-season NFL games.
Wiggins’ NFL career also included short-term contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022 and the Green Bay Packers in 2023.
Wiggins honed his skills at the University of Cincinnati from 2017 to 2020 before advancing to the professional levels. His college career was beneficial, as he tallied 87 tackles, one quarterback sack, and five interceptions in 32 games. His senior year effort earned him First-Team All-American Athletic Conference honors as well as Second-Team All-American honors from the Associated Press.
With the Edmonton Elks gearing up for their 75th season in the CFL in 2024, signing a star like Wiggins may be a big boost to their roster. His past playing expertise and track record on the field provide depth and strength to the Elks’ defensive arsenal as they prepare for a historic season.
In connection with this agreement, the Elks just signed National Offensive Lineman Patrick Davis. In other league news, the CFL has released the list of 2024 free agents, fueling speculation about whether players will find new homes or stay with their present teams.
