Rashard Mendenhall, a former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, is retracting comments he made condemning white people for commenting on sports.
Mendenhall, a Steelers draft pick in 2008, resorted to X (previously known as Twitter) to express his displeasure.
“I’m sick of average white guys commenting on football,” he said on Monday. “Y’all not even good at football.”
“Can we please replace the Pro Bowl with an All-Black vs. All-White bowl so these cats can stop trying to teach me who’s good at football?” he said. I’m smarter than your goat.”
Mendenhall’s comments piqued the interest of others, like former Houston Texans star J.J. Watt, who joked about what a “All-Black vs. All-White bowl” would look like.
“We’d get cooked at the corner, I’m not gonna lie,” Watt wrote. “Nobody on our squad is covering Tyreek (Hill).”
Mendenhall’s remark, on the whole, did not go down well, with many criticizing him as racist and reminding him of Super Bowl XLV, when he was “lit up” by Green Bay Packers’ Clay Matthews and the Steelers went on to lose.
Mendenhall followed up his post to explain himself — sort of.
“Simply tired of being berated by people who arent experts in de game,” he wrote. “We jus pretend like I’m the only athlete tired of fans talking trash?”
Mendenhall went on, “You’re upset over a single tweet.” How about us? Whether you like me or not, I’m a fantastic football player. This demonstrates my point: you can’t speak on the ball alone.”
Mendenhall’s first season was cut short due to injury, but the Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl against the Arizona Cardinals.
The club again made it to the Super Bowl in 2010, but they were defeated by the Packers after Mendenhall fumbled in the fourth quarter, allowing the eventual victors to score.
He remained in the NFL for one more season, with the Cardinals, before retiring in 2014.
