The Washington Commanders are planning to fire HC Ron Rivera after Week 18.

According to a new story in The Athletic, the Washington Commanders will cut company with Ron Rivera at the end of the 2023 season. Rivera was expected to be fired before the 2023 season, and the Commanders have been a disappointment since their schedule began in September.

In Rivera’s first three seasons in Washington, the Commanders only made the playoffs once. The Commanders are 4-9 entering Week 15, and Rivera has a 26-36-1 record in Washington.

Rivera Washington Commanders Eugene Shen will be replaced by the Washington Commanders.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, new team owner Josh Harris plans to remove Rivera after the Commanders’ final game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18:

3 reasons why it's time for the Washington Commanders to fire Ron Rivera

“At the end of the regular season, there will be no surprises in Washington.” Based on many folks I’ve spoken with, it’s widely assumed that Ron Rivera and some front-office employees will be dismissed.

Since acquiring the team, new owner Josh Harris has had the vision to retain Rivera through the end of the season before moving on. It’s really no longer a secret.”

Russini’s report shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Commanders have made moves throughout the season, pointing to swift changes coming to the organization. The Commanders traded Chase Young and Montez Sweat at the deadline. They hired Eugene Shen to oversee analytics and football operations in October.
