The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Following a game that not only made a limited Giants offense look amazing, but also had a highly questionable closing series of play calling, Green Bay Packers supporters were curious to see how the coaching staff would respond to the most recent setback.

The Green Bay Packers are working on run defense.

At the Meadowlands, critical stops appeared to be tough to come for a club that was looking better on defense. The rushing discrepancy versus the Giants was one of the major surprises heading into the game.

The Green Bay Packers defense gave up 209 yards on 34 rushing attempts. Averaging 6.1 yards per rush in the future will almost certainly ensure that the Packers will spend the postseason at home. This statistic is deceiving because the opposition team did not simply line up in the I-formation all evening and dominate the line of scrimmage. The final running total reflected Saquan Barkley’s ability to break a significant gain on any given play, as well as Tommy DeVito’s scrambling legs.

Joe Barry contributed his comments, saying:

It wasn’t just one thing or one individual. It was one thing here, one thing there, and the objective is to find that consistency week in and week out.

If you exclude Saquon Barkley’s single longest run of 34 yards, he ran for 52 yards on 19 carries, for a much better-looking 2.7 yards per carry. This is hardly an excuse for the Green Bay Packers’ defense. Because if you play the hypothetical games, you can add the knowledge that “if” Barkley doesn’t fumble at the end, the figures will seem even worse.

This is to highlight a recurring topic throughout the year that was repeated in this game. The defense performs a terrific job overall of suppressing the rushing game, only allowing critical discussions at inopportune times.

DeVito’s athleticism was another major factor in the rushing defense’s poor performance. He had 10 carries for 71 yards with a long of 26 yards.

This was largely responsible for the Green Bay Packers’ defense failing to sack DeVito. Even when the Packers applied pressure or pushed DeVito to move from the pocket, he was able to elude the pass rush and damage the Packers. One possible saving grace is that DeVito has less tape than other quarterbacks, and in a rematch, the defense should be more careful of setting the edge and compressing the pocket.

Coach Barry had this to say about the zero sacks:

That was upsetting because we felt very good about our group, and the way they were rushing, I never thought that would be an issue.

This will be an opportunity to evaluate how this Green Bay Packers defense adjusts to quarterback style and movement. Baker Mayfield is a pass-first quarterback who can also run. When forced out of the pocket, he will seek to gain yards on the ground. On Sunday, keep an eye out for this resemblance.

This must be a comeback performance. In many ways, the defense recognizes that they squandered a golden opportunity, despite the fact that the other units failed as well. This Green Bay Packers team frequently talks about improving and learning from mistakes. They must pass this Sunday test or else the road to the playoffs becomes considerably more difficult.
