Following a 24-22 loss to the New York Giants on Monday Night Football, the Green Bay Packers dropped to 6-7 on the season. Unlike many of their losses this season, this one was a total disaster on all three fronts. For the most part, Jordan Love and the offense were disconnected and sloppy. The only time everything seemed to work for them was on their final drive, when Love marched the team down the field and fired a touchdown pass to Malik Heath to give them a two-minute lead.
Special teams were also a disaster. The Giants had fantastic field position when Anders Carlson missed a field goal and Keisean Nixon fumbled a punt return. With that short field, New York scored a touchdown. Furthermore, special teams penalties plagued the club throughout the night, providing the Giants great field position.
And, of course, the defense, directed by defensive coordinator Joe Barry, did everything possible to make Giants undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito look like Michael Vick in peak form. Green Bay handed up more than 200 yards rushing for the fourth time this season, and their “prevent” defense on the final drive entirely failed to keep New York out of field goal range.
Tommy DeVito of the New York Giants was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Green Bay Packers.
Tommy DeVito, the Giants’ quarterback, completed 17/21 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 10 times for 71 yards. After overwhelming Chiefs quarterback and two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, the Packers’ defense had no answer for the elusive youngster.
DeVito was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. In the AFC, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was honored.
Green Bay Packers fans publicly blame Joe Barry for his inability to contain the team. Tommy DeVito is an actor.
The Giants’ game plan was not hidden. On offense, everyone understood what they were going to do. However, Barry either refused to call the necessary plays or did not know how to do it. As a result, the Packers’ defense had an ugly performance. Despite having one of the weakest offensive lines in football, the Giants were held without a sack.
As previously said, the defense allowed more than 200 yards on the ground for the fourth time this season. Green Bay has an 0-4 record in these contests. This season, no other team has allowed more than 200 yards rushing.
This is, of course, what supporters have come to expect from Barry’s defensive system, and DeVito’s selection as NFC Offensive Player of the Week just added to their dissatisfaction with the embattled defensive coordinator:
The #Packers led Desmond Ridder, Jimmy Garoppolo, Kenny Pickett, and Tommy DeVito in the fourth quarter…
They lost all four games.
Joe Barry is destroying this team.
Despite their record of 6-7, the Packers currently control the seventh and final berth in the NFC Playoffs. They are effectively in charge of their own fate. They will be in if they win their final four games.
Regardless of whether or not that happens, the Barry Era in Green Bay may be coming to an end.
