After the Leeds United game, the search for Sunderland’s next head coach took an intriguing turn.
According to sources, Will Still is ‘interested’ in becoming Sunderland’s new head coach.
Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is said to have already met with the 31-year-old manager, but is set to meet with Still again on Monday. According to the French newspaper L’Equipe.
According to reports, Reims have set a “departure clause” for Still, but it is not valid until next summer, and the French club’s board is likely to demand a large price before then if he moves to Sunderland.
Still has attracted the attention of football circles and followers on social media after becoming moderately successful at the age of 31 and confessing to polishing some of his talents on Football Manager. He was born in Belgium to English parents and played amateur and semi-professional football before becoming manager of Lierse, Beerschot, and Reims.
Still was asked in May if he would consider managing a Championship club. “Vincent Kompany was at Anderlecht last year and has gone into the Championship and done an incredible job,” he remarked. “I believe the Championship is competitive with many of the world’s top leagues,” he remarked. “Every door is open. I’m not going to close anything at any moment.”
Sunderland have won two straight games against Preston North End and Leeds United since head coach Tony Mowbray was fired last week. Dodds, formerly of Birmingham City, is expected to captain the first squad against Bristol City on Saturday.
