The Buffalo Bills advanced to 7-6 with a road victory over the Kansas City Chiefs the day before, according to head coach Sean McDermott. Interim offensive coordinator Joe Brady and associate head coach/defensive line coach Eric Washington took questions from Buffalo Bills journalists.
Both McDermott and Brady’s interviews are longer than 19 minutes, so this is a fast synopsis leading into their complete films, which can be accessed via the embedded links.
The biggest piece of McDermott news from yesterday’s triumph is that he is now 7-0 as a head coach following his team’s bye week.
Head coach Sean McDermott discussed Stefon Diggs’ recent performance, the club’s trio of running backs, and defensive lineman Ed Oliver’s value to the squad. He reflected on the significance of the Week 14 victory and what it means for their season moving forward, dealing with and responding to adversity as a team and on the field, receiving a game ball from general manager Brandon Beane, and the overall support from the team, those around the league, Buffalo fans, and Bills Mafia everywhere.
McDermott also addressed questions about the defense’s success against quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the significance of the loss of defensive end A.J. Epenesa, and much more, including remarks about Joe Brady’s work in the last three games, his collaborative approach as interim offensive coordinator, and leadership for both players and the offensive staff.
Joe Brady is the interim offensive coordinator.
Brady touched on a variety of topics, from the false narrative that the team was abandoning running back James Cook (which was more of an issue with the offense being off-schedule), to wide receiver Gabe Davis’ day in Kansas City, tight end Dawson Knox’s return, and plenty on quarterback Josh Allen — including the drop in downfield production between him and wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Brady also spoke extensively about the offense’s final drive of the first half, as well as its final drive of the game.
Brady was also asked about the distinctiveness of Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons, as well as the Cowboys’ defense in general.
Brady concluded his press conference by discussing the team’s signing of DJ Mangas as offensive assistant, detailing his job during the weeks and the benefits of having him on the team.
“When a play breaks down, he’s a human eraser and he makes bad play calls work.”
Eric Washington, assistant head coach/defensive line coach, began by responding to questions about slowing down the Cowboys and making them one-dimensional — utilizing “ambitious” aims of taking away the football as a continual goal.
He then took some time to dwell on all that had happened the previous week, hoping to block out outside noise while preparing for the Chiefs’ challenge. Washington sounded stoic in laying out what looked to be a focus on assuring the defense was ready to play while Sean McDermott dealt with the news as and when it came up.
Washington concluded by praising defensive lineman Ed Oliver for his work ethic and leadership, as well as the critical role defensive end A.J. Epenesa plays for the defensive line.
