The Philadelphia Eagles are in need of a boost after suffering a 23-point loss (42-19) at home to last year’s NFC Championship runner-ups, the San Francisco 49ers, last week. And unfortunately for the Eagles, this week is no layup, as they travel to division rivals and long-time rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, who are coming off their sixth win in seven games, with their only loss coming to – well, the Eagles – in a close 28-23 game at Lincoln Financial Field.
Now, the Eagles are dealing with rumors of yet another Jalen Hurts injury, following up on what has been a nagging knee injury since October. These ‘Hurts Playing Hurt’ games, however, have not diminished the Philadelphia Eagles’ standing, as they lead the NFC with a 10-2 record and appear to be in prime position for the NFC’s top seed… if they can beat the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.
One thing the Eagles can be happy about as the holidays approach – and have already begun for some – is the return of one of their key offensive players – of which there appear to be dozens in fairness, and one who can be a difference maker in games like this one – per Ian Rapoport.
What Does This Mean for the Offense of the Philadelphia Eagles?
The Eagles’ offense does not revolve around Dallas Goedert in the same way that it does AJ Brown. Top tight ends like Goedert, on the other hand, are becoming increasingly undervalued commodities, especially against a Dallas Cowboys secondary that includes former DPOY Stephon Gilmore and history maker + rising star DaRond Bland.
And, against a Dallas offense that has been on fire lately, averaging a whopping 42 points per game during their current four-game winning streak, this Philadelphia offense may need to be able to go into a shootout. Doing so with your best tight end – especially since their best option after Goedert is Jack Stoll – will undoubtedly put Nick Sirianni and the rest of the Eagles coaching staff to sleep this weekend.
This also has an impact on free agent signings. Following the acquisition of Shaquille Leonard, many believed that the Eagles would be an ideal landing spot for recently released and former Eagle Zach Ertz. However, with Goedert’s return, it appears that a new NFC contender is eyeing the Super Bowl champion.
Regardless, this is clearly great news for the Eagles and should add to the excitement of Sunday’s game. The Cowboys are 3.5 point favorites right now.
