Every season, the Green Bay Packers, like every other NFL team, selects one player for one of the game’s most prestigious awards.
According to NFL.com, the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award honors an NFL player for his outstanding performance both on and off the field. The award was created in 1970. It was renamed Walter Payton Field in 1999 after the late Hall of Fame Chicago Bears running back. Each team selects one player who has made a significant positive contribution to his community.
In recognition of their achievements on and off the field, all nominees will wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the end of the season.
Furthermore, during the week leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, all 32 nominees will be recognized for their accomplishments. The 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 8, during NFL Honors, a primetime awards special that will air nationally on CBS.
Each nominee will receive a donation of up to $55,000, and the winner of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award will receive a donation of $250,000 to the charity of his choice. The NFL Foundation and Nationwide make all donations possible.
Walter Payton is chosen as the Green Bay Packers’ Man of the Year nominee.
The Packers have several high-character players who could be considered for the award, but with one of the NFL’s youngest rosters, they chose a well-respected veteran as their 2023 nominee.
The Green Bay Packers announced linebacker De’Vondre Campbell as their 2023 Walter Payton Man Of The Year representative on their official website on Tuesday morning.
“We are honored to nominate De’Vondre for this prestigious award,” Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said. “He works tirelessly with his foundation, the De’Vondre Campbell Family Youth Foundation, to assist needy families through football camps, donations, and their Adopt A Family program.” We are honored to recognize his community service and excellence on and off the field.”
Campbell has demonstrated his character both on and off the field throughout his career, according to the Packers’ official website, particularly through his work with his foundation, the De’Vondre Campbell Family Youth Foundation.
The foundation’s mission, which was established in 2019, is to empower at-risk youth and families in need through resource distribution, scholarship, educational advancement, and mentorship-based programming. It organizes community-centered events that provide direct relief, impact, and change for those in need.
In recent years, Campbell and his foundation have taken their efforts to new heights. In addition to his annual football camp in his hometown of Florida, he has demonstrated his commitment to education through programs that assist students and teachers in obtaining resources and much-needed school supplies. He donated $10,000 in teacher supply kits, paper, writing utensils, and classroom supplies to a local Green Bay elementary school, as well as 200 backpacks and supply kids for needy families.
The foundation has also worked to combat food insecurity by collaborating with local grocery stores to distribute hundreds of turkeys to those in need for Thanksgiving over the years. Campbell and his wife, Nicole, have also helped lead several distribution and volunteer sessions at Paul’s Pantry, a local Green Bay food pantry, to provide Campbell’s Chunky Soup to those in need. This fall, the couple also volunteered at Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, where they helped volunteers pack holiday food boxes.
De’Vondre Campbell is a basketball player. The Green Bay Packers are stepping up in new ways.
While it’s clear that the Green Bay Packers’ star is involved in a slew of community efforts through his foundation, the star linebacker is always looking for new ways to give back and assist those in need.
In addition, Campbell’s annual Adopt a Family Program seeks out needy families to assist during the holidays. Last year, the program donated $50,000 in gifts, fulfilling every item on the Christmas wish lists of 25 needy families in the Green Bay and Minnesota areas.
He also went door-to-door delivering many of the gifts, which included everything from new appliances to toys to a new car. Campbell’s foundation helped provide and gift a wedding to one of the families after being connected to them through the Adopt a Family program, providing over $30,000 in donations and in-kind support. Adopt a Family hopes to reach 35 families in need during the holidays this year.
Despite battling injuries throughout the season, Campbell has been an anchor for the Green Bay Packers’ defense in 2023, recording 56 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a pass deflection, and a fumble recovery.
