Gary Neville believes Everton’s points deduction will be reduced as a result of a possible compensation claim from Leicester City.

Everton were docked ten Premier League points earlier this month for failing to follow financial stability regulations. They could face compensation claims from Leicester City, Leeds United, and Burnley. In recent seasons, the three teams were relegated at the expense of Everton.

In an interview with our sister publication, the Liverpool Echo, Neville expressed sympathy for Everton fans’ outrage over the punishment. He also believes the sentence will be reduced on appeal, which could have an impact on Leicester’s compensation claim.

“I thought it was harsh,” Neville said before Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester United. “I knew they’d get some kind of punishment, and I think Everton knew they’d get some kind of punishment because they admitted guilt.”

“However, to receive the Premier League’s harshest sanction ever.” To me, the consequences of the Super League, Project Big Picture, all the scheming behind the backs of the other clubs that the top six did a few years ago, for them to be awarded a £3 million fine and Everton to receive 10 points, appear completely out of sync. Everton has used the word ‘disproportionate,’ and they have stated that they will also be looking at what other clubs’ punishments will be in the summer, which I am not surprised by.

“I completely understand your rage. I could also understand their rage at their own board and ownership. You have to be better than that, whether it’s twenty million pounds or thirty million pounds. Let’s be clear about something. They were told and warned that they were working with the Premier League and that their time was up.

“I can understand why they are disappointed and angry because Everton has come clean, admitted their guilt, and not tried to deny it.” Despite this, they have been absolutely battered with a very harsh punishment. The argument is that they are the first of a new wave of punishments that the Premier League will impose. You don’t mind being punished as long as it’s in line with other clubs and league members. “I completely understand why Everton fans in the Premier League are angry.”

“I can see that some points may be reduced,” Neville added. I believe that if some were reduced, it would feel more acceptable. I believe that at the moment, the Premier League recommended 12 and the Independent Commission recommended 10, and that there will be an appeal; who knows? You’re taking a chance and hoping your number comes up a little higher.

“The problem is that there is no precedent for it.” We know that Portsmouth went into administration and were docked nine points, and Everton overspent by £19 million, which is not a lot of money in today’s game. It is harsh for me, and it will be interesting to see what happens next.”
