A graduate of Leicester City’s academy has been appointed as manager.

Alan Sheehan, a Leicester City academy graduate, has taken over as manager of Swansea City after Michael Duff was fired.

The 37-year-old Irishman takes over as caretaker manager for the Swans’ match against Rotherham this weekend, after Duff was fired just a few months into the job. Their loss to City in October kicked off an eight-game losing streak, leaving them in 19th place, five points above the drop zone.

Swansea have announced that the search for a new head coach is already underway, but that Sheehan will take over as assistant coach for the time being. In the two years since he retired, the former left-back has risen quickly.

After joining Oldham as a player-coach in July 2021, he retired at the start of 2022 to focus solely on coaching, and by the following summer, he was back at Luton as part of Nathan Jones’ backroom team. He then followed Jones to Southampton, where he briefly served as first-team coach.

Town announce Alan Sheehan's return as first team coach

Swansea hired him in the summer to assist new manager Duff. While the other assistant coach, Martin Paterson, has been let go, Sheehan has remained.

Sheehan joined City at the age of 16 after being spotted playing in Ireland as a teenager. He made his first-team debut at the age of 18, in the final game of the 2004-05 season. A few years later, during the disastrous 2007-08 season, he established himself as the club’s first-choice left-back, appearing 24 times and scoring two goals before being loaned out to Leeds by Ian Holloway for the second half of the season.

Sheehan then went on to have a successful career in the third and fourth divisions, becoming a fan favorite at Notts County before captaining Luton Town to a double promotion from League Two to the Championship. He finished his career with over 400 league appearances.
