The Green Bay Packers have one of the most illustrious and cherished histories in professional sports. While there have been dozens of Hall of Famers to wear the Green and Gold (or Blue and Yellow, depending on the era). Recently, there has been a lot of talk about their Hall of Fame (and future Hall of Fame) quarterbacks.
Arnie Herber, Bart Starr, and Brett Favre are the current Green Bay Packers quarterbacks in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Of course, Aaron Rodgers is expected to join them in Canton when he decides to call it a career, whenever that may be.
When the Packers traded Rodgers to the New York Jets this offseason, many people talked about how fortunate they were to have 30 years of Hall of Fame quarterback play. The question was whether they had found a third great quarterback in Jordan Love, or if they would need to find another one soon due to potential poor play from their new starter.
While Love and the 2023 Packers’ offense have been inconsistent, they have won three of their last four games and have improved as the season has gone on.
Jordan Love Has Made Green Bay Packers History 12 Games Into His Career
Love had made one previous career start prior to the 2023 NFL season: a difficult road game against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. To be sure, Love appeared to be a far cry from the quarterback he is now, finishing with 190 yards passing, a touchdown, and an interception.
Since then, a lot has changed. He has 2,599 passing yards (the same as Rodgers had through his first 11 games as a starter in 2008), 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions this season (11 games).
The Packers also revealed that Love became the first quarterback in franchise history to have three games with three touchdown passes and no interceptions in his first 12 starts:
Love accomplished this feat three times this season: in Week One against the Chicago Bears, in Week Two against the Atlanta Falcons, and on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions.
Through his first 12 NFL starts, Aaron Rodgers had only one game with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He only had two for the entire season in 2008.
Through his first 12 NFL starts, Brett Favre had only one game with three touchdowns and no interceptions. It was his only such game in 1992. He actually had two games with no touchdown passes and three interceptions.
If Love continues to throw touchdowns at his current rate (1.7 per game), he will set a Packers record for a first-year starter with 29 or 30.
Love is also averaging 236 yards passing per game. If he maintains his current pace, he will finish with 4,016 passing yards, just 22 yards short of Rodgers’ 2008 total (fun fact: no Chicago Bears quarterback has ever thrown for 4,000 yards in a season).
While this does not guarantee that the Packers have found their next Hall of Fame quarterback, it is a pretty good indication that they have someone special behind center once more.
