There are plenty of expected names among the top ten highest scorers in 2023-24, but there is also room for some surprises.
Several European teams have been in fine form in the first few months of the 2023-24 season, with no trouble finding the back of the net.
We took a closer look at these teams and ranked the top ten scoring teams in Europe’s top five leagues in 2023-24.
Atletico Madrid has 30 goals.
Diego Simeone’s team is frequently stereotyped as a defensive-minded outfit, but that has not been the case this season. Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann have recently combined for some fantastic goals.
In September, their 3-1 victory over city rivals Real Madrid demonstrated how lethal Simeone’s team can be in the final third. Atletico Madrid is having a fun season thanks to a plethora of attacking options.
Inter Milan has 30 goals.
The Nerazzurri currently lead Serie A and also have the most goals scored in the Italian top flight, having scored ten more than nearest rivals Juventus. Their 5-1 thrashing of AC Milan at the San Siro was undoubtedly the highlight of their season thus far.
In the absence of Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez has taken over as Inter’s main man, scoring 13 goals so far.
Real Madrid has 31 goals.
Jude Bellingham has contributed to 13 (11 goals, two assists) of Los Blancos’ total La Liga goals in 2023-24, accounting for 41%.
He only turned 20 in the summer, but he arrived at the Bernabeu and quickly established himself as the leader of that midfield. Extraordinary.
Newcastle has 31 goals.
Eddie Howe’s Magpies have had a mixed season so far, but they’ve beaten PSG, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal, so they can’t be doing too badly.
Their 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United demonstrated that they can be a force to be reckoned with on their day, and they’ve also scored four goals against Chelsea and Aston Villa.
=6. Aston Villa – 31 goals
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa looked the real deal. The Spanish coach has now taken charge of 38 Premier League matches at the club, and over that time they’ve comfortably registered a top-four record.
This season they’ve struggled for clean sheets but demonstrated a canny knack for outscoring the opposition.
Stuttgart has 31 goals.
The Bundesliga rarely disappoints when it comes to goals, and Stuttgart has been a lot of fun to watch so far. They regularly score three or more goals, and in Serhou Guirassy, they have one of the season’s biggest stories – only Harry Kane has more league goals than the Guinean striker.
Sebastian Hoeness has done an excellent job since joining the club in April, and his team is now third in the Bundesliga, one point behind league leaders Bayern Munich.
Girona (5th) – 32 goals
Girona is only a goal difference away from the top of La Liga.
The Catalan minnows have had an impressive start to the season, losing only to table-topping Real Madrid. The top-scoring side in Spanish football has looked so complete that some in the media have speculated that they might be capable of pulling a Leicester.
Girona are a fantastically entertaining team whether they win or not. Viewing by appointment.
Manchester City (4th) – 33 goals
‘It should come as no surprise that Manchester City has been one of Europe’s most prolific sides yet again this season. Pep Guardiola’s team scored 94 league goals last season and are expected to surpass that total this season.
Erling Haaland recently scored his 50th Premier League goal, breaking the record for most Premier League goals scored in the fewest games.
PSG (3rd) – 34 goals
Those who saw Luis Enrique set up PSG with a wildly attacking 4-2-4 formation away to Newcastle in the Champions League will not be surprised to learn that they are Ligue 1’s top scorers by a country mile.
Lionel Messi and Neymar have left, and their places have been taken by Randal Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos, and Ousmane Dembele. It took some time for their new-look attack to click, but recent weeks have shown that they could be a frightening prospect.
Bayer Leverkusen is second with 37 goals.
Since taking over at Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso has done an outstanding job. He joined the club in October of last year, when they were in the relegation zone, and led them to an incredible sixth-place finish.
This season, the German club has advanced to the next level and appears to be capable of giving Bayern a run for their money. They’ve only dropped two points – a creditable draw away to Bayern – and have maintained their lead in the Bundesliga.
It’s no surprise that Real Madrid is considering Alonso for the position of manager. The former Los Blancos midfielder could soon bring his distinct brand of champagne football to the Spanish capital.
Bayern Munich leads the way with 43 goals.
Harry Kane has made an immediate impact at his new club.
