Several reports in the Spanish press have claimed that Aston Villa are one of the candidates in the race to sign Athletic Club star Nico Williams.
The winger’s contract expires in 2024, and El Correo reported last month that the La Liga club is concerned about losing him to the Villans. Unai Emery’s side are willing to pay the fee required to secure the player in January, according to Sport on November 10th.
AS now mentions Aston Villa’s desire to sign the 21-year-old, claiming that they are one of the clubs that have ‘tempted’ him “in recent months.”
The Premier League club is joined by Liverpool and Barcelona, with Real Madrid also keeping an eye on the Spain international. A potential transaction appears to be difficult to carry out.
Because the Basque club and Williams’ agent are in ‘open negotiations’ for a contract extension, and Athletic sporting director Mikel González ‘trusts’ his renewal will be resolved soon.
“There’s a lot of noise surrounding Nico, who is young and a starter in the national team, and we see him and his surroundings very happy and focused at Athletic.” “Everything usually ends well if both the club and the player want him to stay,” he told DAZN, as relayed by AS.
With the player being ‘tempted’ by Aston Villa and others, it is up to the interested parties to persuade him not to renew his contract at Athletic, or to do so only with a reasonable buyout clause.
Williams has a goal and seven assists in ten games this season.
