Following their 2-1 away win against Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa have now broken the club record for wins in a calendar year.
Aston Villa have won on the road for the first time since beating Chelsea in September, much to the delight of the fans.
Despite a slow first half, Unai Emery made changes at halftime that completely changed the game in the Villans’ favor.
The home team took the lead thanks to a wonder goal by Giovani Lo Celso, who connected on the half volley. Pau Torres equalized for Villa on the stroke of halftime, putting Emery’s team in good stead for the second 45 minutes.
Midway through the first half, Ollie Watkins scored his sixth goal in seven games, which proved decisive. Throughout the game, there were numerous offside goals, which kept the score lower than it could have been.
Having said that, Aston Villa have broken the record for most games won in a calendar year with more than a month to go.
Aston Villa have broken what record?
It is safe to say that the club’s rise has been phenomenal since Emery’s arrival. The move from 17th to 7th place is the club’s crowning achievement, but the Villans aren’t slowing down.
At the time of writing, Villa are two points off the top spot and have moved into the top four, passing Tottenham.
The Villans have broken a long-standing club Premier League record with this victory. “Villa have now set a new club record by winning their 22nd Premier match this calendar year,” said John Townley on Twitter. Remarkable!”
With this stat, the Emery revolution is clear. To have 22 wins under the Spaniard in 2023 is quite remarkable, to say the least.
There have undoubtedly been hiccups along the way, with defeats to Leicester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle United stinging. None more so than Jorginho’s last-minute goal against Arsenal, which hit home hard at the time. Given that a year has nearly passed, the Villans have only lost eight games, which is quite remarkable.
This season, the Villa fans have been rewarded with 22 victories and only five draws. In 2023, winning has become both a demand and a mentality.
Fans adore Emery, and it’s easy to see why when you look at these numbers and the way the Villans play.
