Despite performing well on loan at OGC Nice this season, Alan Hutton believes Morgan Sanson is “done” at Aston Villa.

Sanson, 29, was loaned to the Ligue 1 club in the summer. They confirmed in July that they have the option to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis at the end of this season.

Sanson has started every Ligue 1 match while on loan at Nice, which is currently second in the table behind only Paris Saint-Germain. Nice is also the only undefeated team in France’s top flight this season.

Hutton, on the other hand, believes Sanson has no future at Villa Park and is surprised he’s still on the books at the Premier League club given how much he’s struggled in the West Midlands.

“I don’t watch the French league so I don’t exactly know what his performances have been like,” Hutton told Villa News, “but I genuinely thought that his Aston Villa career was over a while ago.”

“It just hasn’t worked out.” It hasn’t happened for him since the beginning.

“It’s been difficult for him, and when he’s had game time, it’s probably not gone as well as he’d hoped.” It’s difficult to shine when you don’t come in right away.

“If Nice has the opportunity to sign him permanently and he is performing at a high level every week, I believe they would take it.” But I believe the Aston Villa side is finished.”

Sanson signed a 2021 contract with Aston Villa from Marseille.

He struggled to find regular playing time for the Villans and was loaned out to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 in January before joining Nice on a loan-to-buy deal in July.
