As Arsenal awaits the outcome of Mikel Arteta’s case, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has called for harsher penalties.

The FA charged Mikel Arteta after he made comments following Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United earlier this month, with Eddie Howe calling for harsher punishments for managers.

Eddie Howe believes managers should face harsher penalties for abusing Premier League referees. Mikel Arteta is awaiting a verdict after being charged by the FA earlier this month. On November 4, Newcastle United defeated Arsenal 1-0 at St. James’ Park, thanks to a controversial goal that necessitated three separate VAR checks.

In his post-match press conference, the Gunners manager called top-flight officiating “embarrassing” and “a disgrace” to English football. This resulted in him being charged, but he has yet to be punished.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s match against Chelsea, Howe emphasized the emotion and pressure that managers face, but admitted that harsher punishments are the only solution. “If you asked every manager, in the cold light of day, we don’t want to see referee abuse,” he told reporters. We want to see a game in which the referee is respected and treated as such.

“On the other hand, there’s the emotion and the pressure.” The situations we are put in as managers are extreme, and sometimes there are reactions, but they are emotional.

“You would never get the outburst you get if you interviewed managers two or three days later.” It is extremely difficult to remain calm when you are emotional or frustrated immediately following a game, as I am sure every other manager feels.

“However, I believe it is something on which we must all collaborate in order to improve the image of the game for everyone who is watching the product.” That is something I would like to see improved globally.

“I believe that imposing restrictions and harsher punishments is the only way to try to improve things.” I believe everyone in the game is willing to do so; I don’t see any evidence to the contrary. It’s simply a matter of establishing the necessary culture.”
