Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS), a former Green Bay Packers wide receiver, was never a fan favorite. He was a fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and spent four seasons in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

When he became a free agent after the 2021 NFL season, MVS signed with the Kansas City Chiefs to play alongside another all-time great quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. The three-year, $30 million contract he signed with them was criticized by Packers fans at the time as an overpayment.

The reason for this is, of course, MVS’s inconsistency as a pass catcher. While his speed commands defenses’ attention, his tendency to drop passes renders him ineffective. Granted, he was a key contributor to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory last season, and he was the Packers’ best wide receiver in their 2020 NFC Championship loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Having said that, MVS has caught less than half of the passes thrown his way in his career. With 1:47 remaining in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, Mahomes launched a perfect pass to a wide open MVS down field. To reach Mahomes’ pass, he had to dive, but the ball landed perfectly in his hands. And then he dropped it.

While the drop was not the only (or even the most important) reason Kansas City lost, it did not help their cause, and Packers fans were quick to roast MVS after the drop.

Packers fans understand the agony of watching MVS drop a pass, and they were out in force on social media following the play shown above:

During MVS’s time in Green Bay, Packers beat reporter Mark Daniels asked Matt LaFleur how he could live with MVS. Many people were outraged at the time that he dared to ask such a question.
