The latest Leicester City news, as the club’s stance resulted in a lack of spending in the summer transfer window of 2022 in order to comply with FFP rules.
Former Leicester City winger Matt Piper claims that playing by the rules cost the club their Premier League place last season, following Everton’s points deduction for Financial Fair Play violations.
At the end of last season, City finished one place and two points behind Everton in the table, resulting in relegation to the Championship. Struggles followed a summer in which transfer funds were reduced for then-manager Brendan Rodgers.
During the summer transfer window of 2022, there was only one outfield signing: Wout Faes, who came in to replace the departing Wesley Fofana. Following the deadline, club chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha explained that steps needed to be taken to ensure the club complied with “sustainability regulations.”
Piper has stated that he is ‘proud’ of the club’s stance last summer when they were in a situation where they could have broken the rules. That is why he believes Everton should have been sanctioned, despite admitting that the punishment was “harsh.”
“There is a lot of deception in the Premier League,” Piper said on the BBC Radio Leicester podcast When You’re Smiling. “At a club like Leicester, they end up clashing with one of their most decorated managers [Brendan Rodgers] because he threw them under the bus by asking for more players.”
“The club refused to give in to the pressure; they stated that they wanted to play by the rules.” Other clubs do not do this.
“I’m very proud of our club.” It has ultimately cost us.
“10 points may seem harsh when compared to what is going on with other clubs, but they needed a sanction.”[However], we weren’t good enough on the field last season.”
