Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Applauds Joe Barry’s Defensive Strategy
In a win over the Chargers on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers played one of their most complete games. In the fourth quarter, Matt LaFleur needed his offense to run smoothly. LaFleur, on the other hand, wanted to send flowers to defensive coordinator Joe Barry after the game. After the game, the head coach praised Barry’s defensive gameplan.
“I’ve got to give Joe a lot of credit,” LaFleur says of late-game defense. He was playing some single-safety there, which I doubt many people would do, but that’s the type of QB you’re up against… He’ll make you pay if you have a lot of weakness in your coverage.”
Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, praises Joe Barry.
LaFleur believed it was brave to play so much single-high safety late in the game.
“I have to give Joe a lot of credit. He was playing some single-safety there, which I doubt many people would do, but that’s the type of QB you’re up against… He’ll make you pay if you have a lot of weakness in your coverage.”
Overall, the Packers performed admirably on defense. Despite being without Jaire Alexander once more, the team limited Justin Herbert to a mediocre 21/36 and 260 yards passing. The team has allowed less than 2,000 passing yards this season. They battled against the run in the first half, with Herbert gashing them, but Barry made a change to have Quay Walker spy in the second half, which helped.
More Joe Barry is on the way. In 2024
In terms of total defense, the defense ranks in the top 10. They are powerful defending the pass and have been able to limit team scoring. The run defense has been problematic, but Barry has insisted that it is due to poor play that is not out of left field. De’Vondre Campbell and Quay Walker are out, and the defensive line has struggled. Even if the club can improve to a more middle-of-the-road run defense, that will be a huge boost.
I’m not a fan of Barry’s scheme, but the figures are hard to ignore. Unless the defense completely collapses in the second half of the season, Barry will very certainly be the defensive coordinator in 2024.
