Today is one of the slowest Newcastle United news days in history, so the only reason this is even being mentioned is because I have a job to do.
According to reports in Italy, Jose Mourinho, the manager of Roma, is interested in taking over at Newcastle.
Because he learned his trade from Sir Bobby Robson and thus feels a connection to the club, the ‘Special One’ has often been tipped as a future Newcastle manager, especially since the PIF takeover.
The Mourinho-Newcastle connection has always been purely media-driven.
Beyond that, Jose Mourinho has never expressed a desire for the job, and Newcastle has never offered him one, but almost every year, a report surfaces linking the former Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United manager to the St James’ Park job.
According to the latest Il Tempo (via Corrieregiallorosso) report, Mourinho wants to stay at Roma but has Newcastle as a backup plan if that fails.
You just because he can walk right into the job here regardless of how well Eddie Howe is doing, how well Eddie Howe is respected in and around the club, and so on.
It’s truly hilarious.
Do we want Mourinho, as good as he is, at Newcastle?
Is it possible that Mourinho will manage Newcastle in the future? Sure, it’s a possibility, but Amanda Staveley isn’t going to fire Eddie Howe just because Mourinho is available.
To be honest, the Portuguese’s reputation in the game has deteriorated. Mourinho is no longer the entertaining and justifiably smug figure he was at Chelsea; he is now almost bitter and whiny. Sure, he can still bring success, but we’d rather endure Eddie Howe’s relentless optimism (sometimes at the expense of the truth) than get caught up in stupid stuff like what Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp are now getting attention for. That’s exactly what Mourinho would bring.
Please keep egos out of our club. And stop attempting to make it happen.
