Paul Robinson has urged Leeds to sign Joe Rodon in January.

In an interview with MOT Leeds News, former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson urged his former club to open negotiations and secure a permanent deal for Joe Rodon in January.

The Welshman is currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, who haven’t seen much of him since joining from Swansea City in 2020.

Despite doing enough to justify his move to Spurs during the Covid-19 pandemic, he has yet to break into the first team and become a fixture in the English capital.

After spending last season on loan at Rennes, it was unclear whether he would see more game time under Ange Postecoglou’s management.

Unfortunately for Rodon, the Australian decided that the Wales international would not be a key part of his first-team plans, preferring other options, and he was loaned out to Leeds, who had recently been relegated to the Championship.

This move has been a boon for the centre-back so far, with 13 league appearances for the Whites and a solid performance under Daniel Farke.

The Whites are hoping to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, and with Spurs unable to recall Rodon in January, Leeds supporters will be hoping Rodon can play a significant role in their potential promotion.

What was Paul Robinson’s take on Joe Rodon?

Robinson believes that the league in which the Whites play next season will determine whether they are able to secure a permanent switch for the defender.

However, in the same interview, he urged Leeds to try to open talks in January to secure a permanent deal, with money potentially available from the Tyler Adams exit deal to help get this signing completed.

“I’ve said many times that Leeds United is a huge draw,” the former England international told MOT Leeds News. It’s a huge football club. Many players, regardless of position, would love to play for this massive football club, whether in the Championship or the Premier League.

“Because of the size of the club, the fanbase, and the quality that exists, Leeds are able to attract players like Rodon, [Ethan] Ampadu, and others to play in the Championship.”

“Whether they’re in the Premier League or not will probably be a factor for Joe Rodon because I suspect if he keeps playing like this, he’ll have more potential suitors at the end of the season.”

“However, you’d hope that Leeds United, regardless of league, would be first in line for his signature.”

“And, from a Leeds perspective, if he keeps doing it until January, why not start talks now?” We’ve got new owners, and there’s money in the club.

“If they’re in the top two, three, or four and looking for promotion, why not try to strike a deal now while they’re still in the Championship?” Because the price skyrockets if you’re a Premier League club.”

Should Leeds United begin negotiations to sign Joe Rodon on a permanent basis in January?

Given that they didn’t make much money from player sales over the summer, it appears unrealistic to make a permanent move now.

Adams may have moved on and offloaded some of their high-earners for the time being, but some of them will return to Elland Road next summer.

They also spent money in the transfer market on players like Ethan Amadpu and Joel Piroe.

With this in mind, it’s difficult to see them forking over the cash required to secure a permanent deal for Rodon in January.

They might be able to afford it in the summer if they get promoted.
