Newcastle United will have to break their transfer record in order to sign Ivan Toney in January.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a return to St James’ Park, with iNews reporting that he is on Newcastle’s radar for 2024.

A return to Tyneside would give Ivan Toney a second chance in a Newcastle shirt after he failed to impress as a youngster. He was given insufficient opportunities and has since gone on to demonstrate his talent at Peterborough United and now Brentford. He is, in the words of Thomas Frank, “special.”

His form for Brentford has earned him a place among the Premier League’s elite strikers, sparking speculation about a move away during the January transfer window. Newcastle has been linked, but Arsenal appear to be the favorites to sign him.

However, new reports from TalkSPORT and 90min suggest that a move away for Toney in the new year may be difficult.

Ivan Toney, rated at £80 million, could sign a new contract with Brentford.
Toney is currently the subject of much speculation regarding the signing of a new contract.

Brentford are confident that Toney will sign a new contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2025, according to TalkSPORT.

They go on to say that the Bees are ‘adamant’ about not selling the England international in January.

90min has also revealed Toney’s future plans, stating that Brentford intend to offer him a new contract despite his desire to leave. 90 minutes later, he adds that any new contract should include a release clause.

They also claim that Brentford currently value Toney at £80 million, a figure that has’shocked’ Toney.

That kind of sum will almost certainly prevent Toney from leaving Brentford in January. Newcastle, for example, cannot afford to pay that much money.

It would require breaking the club’s transfer record, which is simply not going to happen in the middle of the season. And if Newcastle were to break their transfer record, it would not be on a striker with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson already on the team.
