Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle United, has been widely tipped as Gareth Southgate’s successor.

Dan Ashworth, Newcastle United’s sporting director, has responded to speculation linking Eddie Howe to the England job.

Howe has consistently dismissed such speculation, stating that his focus remains on Newcastle, where he has helped guide the club to a Carabao Cup final and Champions League football.

However, with England manager Gareth Southgate’s future uncertain following the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, Howe is a strong contender for the role as one of the best-performing English managers in football right now.

And Ashworth was asked if he was confident Howe would stay at Newcastle for the long term.

“It’s being speculated what may and may not happen and what jobs may and may not be available,” he said. “I’m sure it won’t be available if Gareth wins the Euros this summer!”

“All I can say is, Eddie has got a brilliant relationship across the club with staff, board and supporters – he’s doing a wonderful job and in a really good place, and long may it continue.”

Southgate will be in charge of England for the fourth and possibly final time after reaching the 2018 World Cup semi-final, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-final.

Graham Potter, the former Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion manager, is the current favorite to be named England manager, but Howe isn’t far behind.

The former AFC Bournemouth manager’s initial contract at St James’ Park was set to expire in the summer of 2024, but after helping the club avoid relegation in his first season in charge, he was given a new long-term deal.
