According to the ECHO, Everton believes a sporting sanction for what the club considers an accounting issue is completely inappropriate – and they have not been supported for being open and transparent throughout the process.

The Premier League referred Everton to an independent commission on March 24 for an alleged breach of profit and sustainability rules, but the club denied any wrongdoing and stated that they were “prepared to robustly defend” their position.

Everton’s latest financial accounts, published on March 31, showed a deficit of £44.7 million in 2021/22, bringing their total losses over the previous five years to £430 million. Clubs are allowed to lose £105 million over a three-year period.

However, Premier League teams were given leeway on Covid-related losses when the two seasons played behind closed doors were combined into one, and Everton suggested the pandemic played a significant role. Their total losses include approximately £170 million attributed to Covid, when the club stated that they were unable to generate matchday revenue and a “inability to generate the level of transfer fees which could reasonably have been expected pre-pandemic.”

The only other time a Premier League club was docked points for a non-football reason occurred in 2009/10, when Portsmouth were docked nine points for going into administration during the season. Regardless of the sanction, the Hampshire team would have finished last in the table that season.
