Sam Byram returned to Leeds United this summer, seven years after leaving, and he discussed the changes he has witnessed in both the club and the city.
When Sam Byram returned to Leeds United, he was surprised to see how ‘together’ the club and the city had become. After a seven-year absence, the full-back returned to Elland Road in the summer, signing a one-year contract after impressing on trial.
Under Daniel Farke, Byram has quickly established himself as a starter, appearing in all but two Championship games so far. The 30-year-old has made the left-back position his own, and the team has recovered from a slow start to sit third in the table.
The defender joined the club’s veteran support group as part of the EFL’s Week of Action leading up to Remembrance Sunday and United’s own Armistice Day commemorations. Byram admits that the Whites and the city are back in sync, a far cry from the turbulent Massimo Cellino era he had previously witnessed.
“One of the guys asked me, ‘What’s different from the last time you were here?'” he told i News. When I was last here, the club was going through a rough patch.
“To come back and see how together the city is, to see the atmosphere at home games and the travelling fans, it’s something that’s really taken me by surprise.”
