Leeds United attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson has had a difficult season on loan at Union Berlin, and his manager, Urs Fischer, was fired today.
Leeds’ loan players are having a mixed bag of fortunes at the moment, with Marc Roca and Robin Koch shining in their homelands and Brenden Aaronson struggling to justify a starting spot.
After struggling in the Premier League, the USMNT player moved to Union Berlin for the season, and his time in the Bundesliga hasn’t gone as planned.
What is Aaronson’s status at Union Berlin?
Aaronson’s form hasn’t improved since leaving Elland Road via the back door following relegation, with no goal involvements in 14 appearances across all competitions this season.
His form coincides with his team’s struggles on all fronts, as their draw away to Napoli last week ended a run of 12 straight losses.
That draw, however, did not inspire Union to better performances, as Bayer Leverkusen ripped them apart in a 4-0 loss at the weekend, resulting in the sacking of manager Urs Fischer after five years at the club:
Aaronson’s new beginning?
A loan to Union appeared to be the initial fresh start Aaronson required after failing in the Premier League, but it did not materialize.
It has to be said that his team’s overall performance hasn’t helped him, despite the fact that they overachieved last season to qualify for the UCL.
Now, with a new manager on the way, Aaronson will have a fresh start in Germany, perhaps with someone who plays to his strengths coming in.
There will still be fundamental flaws in Aaronson’s game that must be addressed, but with someone coming in who can provide a fresh perspective on the team, this is the American’s best chance to return to his best form.
