Jannik Vestergaard confirms a transfer to Saudi Arabia and discusses his contract with Leicester City.
Jannik Vestergaard has spoken out about his decision to stay at Leicester City this season, as well as his future plans.
Vestergaard was widely expected to leave the King Power Stadium after the team was relegated from the Premier League in the summer transfer window. The Danish defender claims he turned down an offer to join a club in Saudi Arabia in order to stay with the Foxes and compete for a starting spot under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Under previous manager Brendan Rodgers, the centre-back was frozen out, but he has made a comeback under Maresca. He has started 15 of Leicester’s 16 league games this season, assisting the team to the top of the Championship table.
His performance has earned him a place in Denmark’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Slovenia and Northern Ireland. Who knows what would have happened if he had accepted a big-money move to the Saudi Pro League, where he would have joined the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema, not to mention former Foxes Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante.
Vestergaard confirmed in a new interview with Danish outlet Tipsbladet that he had turned down an offer from an unnamed Saudi club. “All of the decisions I’ve made in my career have been based on an idea of what was best for me in terms of sports,” he added.
“My first season in Leicester did not go as planned, but I believe my subsequent club choices did.”

“I’ve always chosen with football in mind; I’ve never chosen based on money, and I won’t in the future.” As a result, I will never take the money and flee.”
Vestergaard’s current contract expires in 2021 after he joined Leicester from Southampton for £15 million. The 31-year-old admits he has no idea what the future holds for him.
“I’m just enjoying it like crazy,” he told me. “I don’t think many people thought I’d be in this situation four months ago, so I’m enjoying it.”
“Something (regarding his future) has to happen at some point, but it doesn’t bother me.”
“I’ve rediscovering my love of football.” I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that I was almost not allowed to train for a while, but it has certainly meant something not being able to interact with a football, which I have done since I was very young. It’s definitely something I’ve brought with me.”
