Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has been ruled out of the England squad due to an injury.
Newcastle United will be without striker Callum Wilson for ‘a number of weeks’ after he suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund.
Wilson was substituted at halftime during the Champions League match, but he was later called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
Wilson is doubtful for Saturday’s trip to AFC Bournemouth, according to both Southgate and Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. However, after Wilson did not travel to the Vitality Stadium for England’s 2-0 defeat, Howe confirmed Wilson had withdrawn from the squad.
“Yeah, he won’t travel with England,” Howe confirmed to The Gazette. “He’s going to be out for a number of weeks.”
Wilson joins Miguel Almiron, who was forced off with a hamstring injury in Newcastle’s defeat at Bournemouth. Wilson, Almiron, Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, Matt Targett, and Javier Manquillo are all out for the Magpies as they head into the international break.
“[The international break] has come at a very good time but I don’t necessarily think that means we’re going to have a flood of players back but hopefully we can get one or two,” he said.
Newcastle’s next match after the international break is at home against Chelsea at St James’ Park. While Bruno Guimaraes returns from suspension, the Magpies will be without Lewis Hall, who is ineligible to play against his parent club.
“Bruno was a huge miss,” Howe went on to say. “Based on today’s performance, you can see the impact he has on our midfield.” We’ll get him back if he returns from international duty in good shape.”
Newcastle have lost all seven Premier League games Guimaraes has missed since joining the club in January 2022.
