Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is considering a deal for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen in order to remedy a weakness in his squad.
Newcastle United are back in the hunt for Andreas Christensen, according to Sport via Sport Witness, and may try to sign the Danish international in January. The 27-year-old La Liga star has become an indispensable member of Barcelona’s squad, complicating any move away from Camp Nou.
When Chelsea lost Andreas Christensen on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, there were many other teams interested in signing him, including a few from the Premier League. He eventually joined Barcelona after a turbulent summer at Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s decision has already paid off, with the 27-year-old La Liga star establishing himself as a key player under Xavi Hernandez. The Danish star has put in some consistent performances for the Vcatalans and is widely regarded as their best central defender at the moment.
Despite just being in Spain for over a year, the Danish star has piqued the curiosity of English clubs, especially Manchester United. Newcastle United, according to the report, are also interested in signing him during the summer transfer window.
Eddie Howe wants to rectify a weakness in his team’s depth in the central defensive position. He elected to play six fullbacks and all of his remaining central defenders in a recent cup game against Manchester United.
The injury to Sven Botman has highlighted how poor their defensive options are. Howe currently relies on Fabian Schar and forgotten club captain Jamal Lascelles to anchor the backline and would like to find replacements in the January transfer window.
Most reports indicate Newcastle United urgently needs a midfielder, although Howe would also want to prioritize a midfielder. Looking at Christensen makes perfect sense for the Magpies, but any trade is fraught with issues.
They are also allegedly interested in Jules Kounde, Christensen’s Barcelona teammate. Both of those players, particularly the 27-year-old La Liga ace, are content to stay in Catalonia, and Barcelona has no desire to lose the Dane.
As a result, Newcastle’s pursuit of Christensen in January may become more problematic. Not only will they have to make a large offer, which appears complicated in comparison to some FFP issues, but they will also have to persuade the player to exchange the warmth of Catalonia for the cold of Tyneside.
