‘Got to score,’ says Alan Shearer of a crucial Newcastle United moment.

Newcastle United were defeated 1-0 by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League for the first time this season.

Alan Shearer has spoken out about a crucial moment in Newcastle United’s defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night. After going behind on the stroke of half-time, Callum Wilson was given a fantastic opportunity to equalize in the 57th minute, but his effort was saved by Gregor Kobel in the Dortmund goal.

On a damp night at St James’ Park, a goal at that juncture could have changed Newcastle’s fortunes, and Shearer believes the nine-cap England international should have started his Champions League account.

“He’s got to score, and it has to be in the back of the net,” Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live. Schar’s excellent tackle set them on their way, as Wilson and Gordon exchanged great passes.

“Wilson took a touch, and I’m not sure he needed it.” It simply allowed the goalie the opportunity to set himself.”
