On their official Instagram account (16 October), the Hammers marked three years since the winger originally joined the club on loan.
The Algerian international was recruited permanently from Brentford in January 2021 after being on loan from the Bees.
McAvennie was confused when the East London club opted to sell fellow winger Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion.
The pundit wasn’t the only one who questioned the choice to let the youngster leave, with Sky Sports (5 September, 2020) reporting that Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere, and Trevor Sinclair were also taken aback by his departure.
The 28-year-old has made nearly 150 appearances for the Claret and Blues, scoring 24 goals and assisting on 19 occasions.
McAvennie told West Ham Zone: “At the time, I thought it was stupid because there was a young player everyone was raving about in the exact same position, and they sold him and brought in Benrahma, and I was like, really?”
“But he proved me wrong; he’s a wonderful, wonderful talent.” So it simply goes to demonstrate that David Moyes knows what he’s doing.”
When it comes to transactions at the London Stadium club, Hammers manager Moyes has made some good and some disastrous ones. But attacker Benrahma has been a standout, with the winger instrumental in the club’s recent success.
