The Premier League has requested that Everton be docked points, with Leeds United among the teams keeping an eye on the situation.

Everton, who finished above Leeds United and Leicester City last season, is having their FFP case evaluated by an independent commission.

Everton are reportedly facing a 12-point loss after the Premier League proposed an extraordinary punishment in the club’s ongoing investigation over alleged Financial Fair Play violations. According to the Telegraph, the Premier League has suggested to the independent committee considering the issue that the Toffees be docked up to 12 points.

Everton incurred financial losses of more over £300 million over a three-year period, much exceeding the Premier League’s £105 million maximum. The club firmly denies breaking Premier League rules, arguing that exemptions, notably leeways granted during the Covid epidemic, have meant that they have remained compliant with all of the competition’s standards.

Everton was referred to the independent commission by the Premier League in March, with further potential sanctions highlighted in the report including a fine and/or transfer embargo. If the Toffees are punished 12 points, they will drop to the bottom of the Premier League table with a minus-five point total.

The team is currently undergoing a takeover, with American group 777 Partners awaiting Premier League certification. Everton have been battling relegation for the previous two seasons, with Sean Dyche’s team finishing 17th last season while Leeds United were relegated.

The Whites, along with Burnley and Leicester City, are alleged to have issued a combined letter to 777 Partners alerting them that they intend to sue the club if they are found guilty. According to the Mail, each of these three clubs is prepared to file a claim for £100 million, a number that reflects the loss of a season’s worth of Premier League revenue.
